Letter: Wanted: a clear definition of an evil empire

The world feels more dangerous today — especially from a European perspective.

Now Edward Luce’s “The world from Washington” (Life & Arts, May 14) squarely adds China to our worries. Luce’s important article outlines the growing anti-China hawkishness in Washington.

Can someone now write an article to explain exactly why China is an “evil empire”? And why President Joe Biden frames the global stakes as a contest between autocracy and democracy?

Is there something intrinsically dangerous about a different ideology? Or is there evidence to indicate that China is preparing to invade Taiwan or elsewhere?

President Vladimir Putin misuses the power of language, explanation and history to help underpin his horrific invasion of Ukraine.

Henry Kissinger, according to Luce, disapproves of the growing US hawkishness and feels ideological differences should not be the main issue of confrontation.

I am not swayed either way as I do not know the full story. I would, therefore, appreciate a clear explanation of why China is an evil empire, then I will judge for myself.
